Holly Week in Cartagena 2023

Holy Week in Cartagena, declared of International Tourist Interest in 2005, is the local festival par excellence. There are four brotherhoods that hold it:

  • Ilustre Cofradía del Santísimo y Real Cristo del Socorro. Their distinctive colour is black.
  • Pontificia, Real e Ilustre Cofradía de Nuestro Padre Jesús en el Doloroso Paso del Prendimiento y Esperanza de la Salvación de las Almas (CALIFORNIOS). The colour that distinguishes them is red.
  • Royal and Illustrious Brotherhood of Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno (MARRAJOS). The distinctive colour is purple.
  • Real e Ilustre Cofradía de Nuestro Padre Jesús Resucitado (RESUSCITATED) Their colour is white.

Our processions are distinguished among other things by the order, the flower, the music and the martiality.

The most important sculptors of our Holy Week are, among others, José Capuz, Mariano Benlliure or Juan González Moreno.

Another outstanding feature is the embroidery, some of which dates back to the 18th and 19th centuries.
