How the celebrations of La Virgen del Carmen and La Magdalena are celebrated in Cangas del Narcea

The celebrations of El Carmen and La Magdalena, recognized as a Festival of Touristic Interest in the Principality of Asturias, take place from July 14th to 22nd. During this period, the "peñas de la pólvora" (gunpowder groups) and fireworks displays are the main attractions.

Every July 16th, in the town of Cangas del Narcea, the famous "Descarga" in honor of La Virgen del Carmen is celebrated, a festivity that is highly revered throughout Asturias.

The day begins with a solemn mass at the Chapel of Carmen, followed by the Upward Procession and morning competitions between the different groups. Then, the High Mass is celebrated at the Basilica of Santa María Magdalena, and the festivities begin with parades, festive music, and marching bands.

In the afternoon, the Procession of Carmen takes place, in which the image of the Virgin returns to her chapel. Afterwards, when it reaches the center of the Roman Bridge, the "Descarga" begins: a daytime pyrotechnic show organized by the Society of Artisans of Our Lady of Carmen, a centuries-old association.

The "Descarga" involves numerous shooters and is complemented by specially mounted machines. Thousands of fireworks explode simultaneously for a few minutes with a thunderous sound that fills the air with the smell of gunpowder throughout the town of Cangas del Narcea. This is a clear homage from the groups of Cangas to the Virgin and to those who are no longer present. The sensation is indescribable, and it is necessary to participate and experience the event to truly understand it, as it is a unique experience.
