What is the celebration of the Suelta del Perro Maldito?

The tradition begins on the 28th of September at 24:00 hours, when all the lights in the village are switched off, leaving the town in darkness, to represent that the dog has been released from its chains, and that evil is invading the streets of Valsequillo.

Thus begins the show that shows the struggle between good and evil. There is music, pyrotechnics, acrobatics, stilt walkers and jumpers. There are also those who personify the witches and demons who walk through the streets scaring the spectators.

The event culminates with a fireworks display.

Origin of the Suelta del Perro Maldito (Release of the Cursed Dog) festival

It has its origins in 1803, when the sculptor Luján Pérez sculpted a figure of Saint Michael the Archangel, and at his feet there is a dog, instead of a dragon.

As a result, the people of Valsequillo claimed that on the night of San Miguel, the devil himself transformed into a dog and was released from his chains, thus initiating the struggle between good and evil.

While the men went out into the streets to search for and capture the witches and demons, the women and children stayed in the houses praying, so that the night of misfortune would soon come to an end.

This show is prepared several months in advance, the participants are not professionals in the world of theatre, they are young people and neighbours of the municipality.

Remember the phrase that the women and children chant that night: "no te arrimes a los barrancos porque el diablo está suelto" (don't go near the ravines because the devil is loose).
