Tamarite de Litera Carpets
It is a festival linked to Corpus Christi in which the streets are decorated with carpets made of dyed sawdust and flowers. It is celebrated on the Sunday following Corpus Thursday, as is the case with many festivals that have had to adapt to the working days of modern times. The carpets are prepared the night before.
The festival revolves around the procession of the Holy Sacrament, which is carried by children, traditionally those who have received their First Communion. The procession is surrounded by flowers and colors, reflecting a time of joy and splendor in which it takes place.
The tradition likely originated from a practical aspect, such as spreading sawdust for hygienic reasons to pave the way for the procession.
A popular saying refers to the visual appeal of this celebration: "There are three Thursdays in the year that shine brighter than the sun: Holy Thursday, Corpus Christi, and the Ascension."
There are other cities in Spain, both on the mainland and in the Canary Islands, that adorn the streets with carpets and flowers during the Corpus Christi festivities.
